Australia’s superannuation rules continue to evolve, and several recent changes are set to significantly impact Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs). One of the biggest updates is the increase to the transfer balance cap, the cap is currently $2 million and is expected to rise to $2.1 million from 1 July 2026. For SMSF members, this may create opportunities to transfer additional amounts into pension phase, where investment earnings are generally tax free. Members who have not yet used their full cap may be able to make larger retirement phase transfers or reconsider contribution strategies before retiring.
Another major development is the introduction of Division 296 tax. From 1 July 2026, individuals with total super balances above $3 million will face an additional 15% tax on earnings attributed to the portion exceeding the threshold, increasing the effective tax rate to 30%. Balances above $10 million may attract an even higher rate of 40%.
These reforms reinforce the importance of regular SMSF reviews, strategic contribution planning, and updated estate planning to ensure compliance and tax efficiency in an increasingly complex super environment.
